ChatGPT’s Agent Mode is 👎

Hi Reader,

It’s been a whirlwind week for me…I flew to Boston for my son’s surgery (he’s fine…just sinus surgery, and he’s recovering nicely), then from Boston to San Francisco to give the keynote at a company’s annual conference. Just got back in late last night.

So I was a little out of the loop in my usual tinkering and experimenting, but I did get a chance to explore ChatGPT’s agent mode. Watch the video of that experiment down below, but if you want to save yourself 12 minutes, the short story is that it’s a disappointment. I have no doubt it will end up being great, but for now, not so much.

Big News of the Week

OpenAI introduces ChatGPT Agents and it’s *cough* underwhelming.

OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT Agents and I’m pretty disappointed. It’s super buggy, and honestly not even as good as ChatGPT’s Deep Research function. At least, so far. They just released it too early. I’m sure it will get better. If you have Agent Mode in your account, give it a try and let me know what you think.

Here’s a longish screenshare video I did tinkering around with it.

Veo3: Turn images into videos. I finally got access to Veo3 in my Gemini account. Turn photos into videos…with sound! I forgot about the sound part and just gave it this prompt “woman (me) crosses the street and a little green martian chases her. (Warning: it’s terrible, lol.)

Similarly, Google Photos adds new AI tools to remix and animate your pics

You can now remix your old photos into new styles and even turn them into short video clips using AI. Think birthday collages, travel highlights, or family moments—automatically created, personalized, and ready to share. It’s rolling out in the U.S. first, and if you use Google Photos, you’ll start seeing a “Help me visualize” option inside the Memories section.

Perplexity may soon ship on Android phones as the default browser

They’re in talks with phone makers to pre-install their AI-powered “Comet” browser on Android devices. This browser gives you direct answers instead of search links, and could challenge Google’s dominance on mobile. If you’ve been wanting a faster, more direct way to get information on your phone, this could be the shift.

Everyone I’ve spoken to who has tried the Comet browser gives it rave reviews, but it’s $200 a month! Regular people like you and I can get on the waiting list here.

Just keep in mind that Anthropic will begin training Claude on user data starting September 28 unless you opt out—so it’s worth checking your settings. Hi Reader, This week I had a chance to have a little fun with AI, outside of my usual business use-case experimenting...which, if I'm being honest, is also totally fun to me. I turned ChatGPT on my phone into my personal pocket IT department, I had my ChatGPT agent find a vegan banana pudding recipe and shop for (and purchase!) the ingredients, and I thoroughly enjoyed messing around with Claude Artifact's suggested use cases. Especially this one. This newsletter is sponsored by: Superhuman...
