Free ChatGPT Users, You Just Got an Upgrade
Published 7 days ago • 4 min read
Hi Reader,
Hello from Ibiza!
I’m on a 10-day private cruise through the Balearic Islands and thanks to AI (and my amazing team), I’m able to send you the newsletter right on schedule, and deliver my regular service and content to my subscribers and clients. That’s true leverage and what I wish for everyone! As I say a lot these days, “When AI handles the mechanical, humans can handle the meaningful”.
This week’s AI updates are all about giving you more control—over your tools, your content, and even how your AI sounds. NotebookLM now lets you set the tone of your AI-generated podcasts, and ChatGPT’s “Juice 200” slider lets you crank up how hard it thinks. Free users can now try Projects, OpenAI launched its real-time voice model, and Microsoft quietly rolled out its own AI models under the Copilot hood. Things are getting faster, more flexible, and more personalized across the board.
NotebookLM’s Audio Overviews (AI-generated podcasts from your documents) now let you pick the tone—casual, professional, or educational—so summaries sound the way you want. This makes it easier to match podcasts to your learning or presentation style.
Projects lets you group chats by topic, set response rules, and upload files. Free-tier users can now try it (up to 5 files), while Plus gets 25 and Pro gets 40. It’s live on web and Android, with iOS rolling out soon.
Custom GPTs can now browse the live web, pulling fresh information instead of relying only on training data. At the same time, a new Thinking Effort slider lets you control how hard the AI “thinks”—from Light (5) to Max (Juice 200). Max is limited to Pro and Enterprise due to heavy compute needs, but it pushes ChatGPT into deeper reasoning territory. Together, these updates make ChatGPT smarter, fresher, and more flexible for everything from casual chats to complex problem-solving.
The new gpt-realtime voice model combines speech and text in one system, making conversations faster and more natural. It can change tone, shift emotions, and switch languages mid-sentence with almost no lag. The Realtime API supports MCP servers, image inputs, and even phone calls, giving developers tools to build smooth, human-like AI voice agents. Early examples include a fitness coach you can talk to and language-learning role-play partners.
Microsoft quietly launched its own family of AI models instead of relying solely on OpenAI. These in-house models will power Copilot features across Office, Windows, and Azure, giving Microsoft more control over speed, pricing, and future development.
↩️ Don’t miss out: Did you miss our last newsletter? We covered Anthropic’s new policy—starting September 28, 2025, they’ll use your chat and code transcripts to train AI unless you opt out. This applies to Claude’s Free, Pro, and Max plans (Claude Code too). Check it here!

Hi Reader, AI is starting to feel less like a tool and more like a teammate. Claude now lives in your browser (I don’t have access yet, but I’ve seen what it can do and it looks promising). Just keep in mind that Anthropic will begin training Claude on user data starting September 28 unless you opt out—so it’s worth checking your settings. Meanwhile, Gemini is booking restaurant reservations, ChatGPT is stepping into full assistant mode, and Google Translate now doubles as a language tutor. I...
Hi Reader, This week I had a chance to have a little fun with AI, outside of my usual business use-case experimenting...which, if I'm being honest, is also totally fun to me. I turned ChatGPT on my phone into my personal pocket IT department, I had my ChatGPT agent find a vegan banana pudding recipe and shop for (and purchase!) the ingredients, and I thoroughly enjoyed messing around with Claude Artifact's suggested use cases. Especially this one. This newsletter is sponsored by: Superhuman...
